Sweden’s GRAND MAGUS are back with a new album, ‘Sunraven’. If you’re a fan of Classic / Doom Metal you know you are in for a treat from the first notes of the first track, ‘Skybound’. These guys have been around for a while, and it shows. They know what they’re doing. The album is based on the epic poem of Beowulf. The story is used a starting point really , and stories are told in song form from the point of view of both Beowulf and the monster, Grendel. Fascinating stuff. The songs are epic, with an uncanny sense of melody, especially in the guitar solos, which flow very nicely indeed. The production is good, not over produced, still has the earthiness, ‘just the right amount of dirty’ is how I like to put it.
Overall, an album you should check out.
